What’s in My Backpack: A Real-World Packing Breakdown

I get asked a lot: “What do you actually carry on a trip?” So here’s a real breakdown from a recent 3-day backpacking trip in the mountains. Total base weight: ~9.8 lbs (4.4 kg).

The Big Three

  • Backpack: Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60
  • Tent: Durston X-Mid 1P
  • Sleep: Enlightened Equipment Revelation quilt + Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite pad

Clothing (worn + packed)

  • Merino T-shirt, synthetic shorts, trail runners (on me)
  • Puffy jacket, wind shell, fleece beanie
  • Rain jacket + pants
  • Extra socks + underwear

Kitchen

  • BRS-3000T stove + 750ml pot
  • Spoon, mini Bic lighter
  • Food: dehydrated meals, jerky, trail mix, oats
  • Sawyer Squeeze + 2L CNOC bladder

Miscellaneous

  • Headlamp + spare battery
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste tabs, floss
  • Tiny first aid kit (tape, blister kit, ibuprofen)
  • Tenacious tape + zip ties
  • Buff, sunglasses, UL wallet
  • Kindle + power bank (10,000 mAh)

Luxury Items

  • Sit pad
  • Instant coffee + tiny silicone pour-over cone
  • Lightweight journal

Everything fits neatly, with food on top. Packing light doesn’t mean going without — it means choosing smart. This setup lets me move fast, sleep well, and enjoy the trail without sore shoulders.
