Lessons I Learned From Overpacking (And How I Fixed It)

When I started hiking, I packed like I was heading into a survival scenario. My pack was 50 lbs. I brought full-size toiletries. Two jackets. Four pairs of socks. A book and a journal. I thought I was being “prepared.” I was actually being ridiculous.

Here’s what I learned — and how I fixed it:

1. Just-in-Case Items Add Up

I used to bring a ton of extras: that second fleece, those “emergency snacks,” an entire med kit. But the more I hiked, the more I realized — most emergencies are better solved by experience, not more stuff.

2. Clothing = Your Bulkiest Mistake

I now follow the “one to wear, one to wash, one spare” rule. No more five T-shirts or a separate outfit for camp.

3. Know the Forecast

I used to pack for every possible weather condition. Now I check real-time forecasts and build my kit around what’s likely, not what’s scary.

4. Gear Weight Compounds

Heavy pack = more fatigue = slower pace = worse mood. Once I lightened up, everything else improved: knees, morale, even my photography.

5. Repack After Every Trip

After each hike, I unpack and lay everything out. What didn’t I use? Why did I bring it? This simple habit helped me dial in my kit fast.

Now I hike with 10–12 lbs base weight, and it feels like freedom. Overpacking taught me what I really need — and how good it feels to leave the rest behind.
